Raising A Special Needs Adult

The Bible tells us in Psalm 127:3 "Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him."

Even though I know that this is true, raising a special needs child has been the most challenging thing that my wife and I have ever done. When you are making your plans and goals in High School, it probably does not go like this: go to college, find a good paying job, marry the love of my life, and have a child with disabilities. It is not something you think will "ever happen to me." Unfortunately, it does happen to a lot of people and it certainly does not seem fair.

We have gone through all of the emotions over these 20 years of raising a special needs child and now a special needs adult. We have been angry at God and have wished on more than one occasion that we had never had kids. I know that may sound terrible to some, but those who judge have never lived through the sever violent anger as the result of being told to get off of "that website" or when a video game freezes and he didn't get to save it. We all get upset when things do not go our way, but with our son, things get broken!

I could go on and maybe I will write more another day. What has helped us the most is our faith in Jesus Christ, without Him, I can imagine that this journey would have been much more difficult.

Pray for my wife and I as we are now entering this next stage of having a special needs child, adulthood.
